Over the past two years I have recorded a series of phone calls discussing the nature of art. Each 30 minute conversation is between myself and a paid sex-worker found in the back pages of a local paper. The calls are steered away from my presumed sexual desire and towards a conversation about the individuals understanding of what art is and its function in the world.
Each call not only brings to mind the complex relationship between two people speaking but two strangers conversing within a strict set of circumscribed boundaries. One is paid the other, paying. One participant is meant to satisfy sexual desire, the other to receive contentment. The calls themselves divert these objectives into a more personal conversation that often involves a more intense satisfaction than originally intended. Here, a phone call that is made in the guise of intimacy becomes real intimacy one human connecting to another through their understanding of art.
